« Future = Karma + Present »

What is karma?  Karma is the past.  Forget the Tibetan mystique of the word "karma."  Karma = the Past.  Now, what does the Future = to?

Future = Karma + Present, i.e. Future = Past + Present.

So, karma does not pre-destine or pre-determine or pre-scribe the future, it only pre-determines and prescribes the present.  What currently is, had to be, because of the Past.  But what is yet to be (the Future, that is) is a combination of what was (i.e. the Past) plus the Present (with all its yet to manifest potentialities).

If the Present is mindless, then the Future = Karma + Zero = Karma.  In other words, if the Present is on autopilot, then the Past does predict the Future, in which case, it is, indeed, accurate to equate Karma with Fate.

But if the Present is mindful (i.e. choice-filled), then the Present introduces new variables (new variance, new variability) into the equation of the Future, in which case the Future = Karma + Choice.

Of course, there is always a hidden variable (or constant) in these equations - the variable of Reality.

So, if looked "objectively," your Future = (collective) Karma + (your) Present (which may or may not be mindful, i.e. choice-filled) + Reality (of the rest of the "agents"/"actors" are doing or not doing)
